Blog Network Closing

July 16th 2008 19:28
One of my favorite sites to write for is my Bike Diva blog. I started the Bike Diva blog back in January. It was hosted on the WebbleYou blog network.

Today I received a very long email from the WebbleYou administrator stating that he is shutting down WebbleYou by the end of the month. Here is a copy of part of that email

DISTURBING EMAIL
"Dear WebbleYou Blog Network Authors,

I regret to announce that WebbleYou Blog Network is closing its doors. While the content you write increases the quality of the network each day, several factors have brought us to a point where we can no longer continue.

-Individual domains will be for sale, so if you like the domain you're blogging on, make an offer and we can discuss a transfer of ownership. Authors will be given preference over external buyers. Most domains will be left to expire or sold externally if an offer is not made.

Next, some background on why we are unable to continue operations:

-I am personally no longer able to devote the time necessary to handle day-to-day management or even ownership functions. I am starting a new job as well as a PhD program in the fall, and already I am unable to keep up adequately with your routine requests for payments, earnings reports, basic site maintenance, etc.

-Previous attempts to find a buyer for the network (at any price) have failed. Those who have the technical and business skills required for this type of work are typically already doing so on their own, and the legal implications of a transfer of ownership are more than I want to deal with at this point.

-The network has, despite all our hard work, not been profitable, much less lucrative for authors. Blogging has become quite commericialized and competitive, and while I believe there is a market for networks with "content integrity" as we strived for at WYBN, it is not a financially viable business model at this scale.

Thanks,
Justin
WebbleYou.net"

BY-BY WEBBLEYOU
YIKES!!!! I thought WebbleYou was doing really well. Although they are a small site, their blogs seem to be quite popular. I've been getting TONS of traffic to my site lately. But I never set it up thinking I would make any money.

I am a freelance writer and one of the areas I am trying to concentrate on is sports, nutrition and training type of articles. I am a long distance cyclist and have recently started to participate in time trial races. So cycling is a passion of mine. EVERYONE knows me as the Bike Diva now.

BIKE DIVA ON WORDPRESS
WebbleYou uses Wordpress, so I'm already familiar with how to use that blogging platform. So I went over to Wordpress.com this morning and signed up for a free account. And I was able to get everything from the old site imported into the new site.

BIKE DIVA DOMAIN
But now I am trying to get my domain name from WebbleYou. My new site is thebikediva.wordpress.com. Fine and dandy, except that I've spent the last 7 months linking to other sites using bikediva.net. So I am waiting to hear from Justin at WebbleYou to see if he will transfer the bikediva.net domain over to me. Otherwise I'm gonna have to spend another 7 months getting traffic to find the new site.

YIKES!!!!!!

Write for Demand Studios

WRITE FOR DEMAND STUDIOS
Demand Studios is the content provider for a number of online sites such as e-how, answer bag, golflink, flowgo and more. They accept freelance writers to write for their various websites.

You can submit an application to write for them. I submitted my application back in November. Didn't think they were interested. Got an email last week saying I had been accepted to write for the e-How website. I can claim between 1 and 10 articles at a time. They pay $15 per article - exclusive content.

REVAMPED WEBSITE
I think Demand Studios just redid their whole site not too long ago. My original application must have gotten lost some where. I'm almost thinking I might have sent in another application a few weeks ago? Maybe I should use a spread sheet to keep track of that kind of stuff!?!

SHORT ARTICLES
Demand Studio articles are really short. You use their template to write the article according to their format. I wouldn't be interested in reselling the articles anywhere. But I could rewrite/expand upon the article to make it a whole new article and try and sell that somewhere else.

CLAIM ARTICLES TO WRITE
You don't have to claim 10 articles at a time. You have 7 days from the day you claim an article until the time it is due. So you could claim 1 article a day for 10 days, that way you would spread out the due dates of each article. Or just claim articles during your slow time while continuing to write for your other gigs.

SUGGEST ARTICLES TO WRITE
You can also suggest articles to write. I claimed 6 articles and didn't really see anything else I was interested in. I submitted suggestions for 3 other articles - one of which was accepted within seconds. Another article I suggested (How to Choose a Road Bike) was denied - too many published articles on that topic. I changed the title to How to Choose a Women's Road Bike and it was accepted right away. Another article suggestion was How to Choose a Triathlon Bike - that was rejected so I changed it to How to Choose a Time Trial Bike, that suggestion was accepted right away.

I've written 5 articles so far. Takes a day or two for them to be accepted and published. Once they are published you can claim additional articles to always have 10 articles in your claimed article list. I've been submitting photos with each of my articles too, but most articles on e-How don't have photos.

PAYMENT
I just got payment for my first 4 e-How articles through Demand Studios last night via Paypal. Yippie - thought it was going to take longer to get paid.

Demand Studios provides content for around 50 sites besides e-How including trails.com, gardenguides.com and livestrong.com. As a biker, who writes a lot about biking, I would love to be able to put on my resume that I write for trails.com and livestrong.com.

I'm wondering if you have to prove yourself with Demand Studios by writing for e-How at first. Maybe once you've been writing e-How articles for awhile they approve you to write for their other sites? I filled out a second application, using a different email, saying I was only interested in writing for livestrong.com. Still waiting to hear back.

PHOTOS
I've been adding photos to all my articles. They don't pay extra for adding photos - still just $15 per article.

Does anyone else have experience writing for any of Demand Studios sites? I would like to hear about other writer's experiences with Demand Studios.

Take care,
Lynn

Today.com Blog Site

April 22nd 2008 17:54
www.today.com.

Here is a blogging site that freelance writers may want to check out. If you are looking for other sites that pay you to blog, then check out the www.today.com site. I found their listing on a pro bloggers job board site last week. They are looking for bloggers in just about any category.

I sent in an application to see if they would be interested in a Herb Gardens blog. They emailed me today with the link to my blog: herbgardens.today.com. Not much to see so far, still figuring out the formating etc... Looks like the site uses Wordpress as the blogging software. My Bike Diva blog, with the WebbleYou blog Network, uses Wordpress, so I am pretty comfortable using that software.

Anyways, they say they pay $5.00 per blog post, max 1 blog post per day ($35 per week, around $140 per month). After a few months, they take a look at how much traffic your site is generating and decide whether or not to offer you more $$ per post. Looks like they place google ads all over your blog, that's how they generate income.

You have to accumulate at least $50 before you can be paid. I added my first post today, so it will be a few weeks before I'll be able to request payment. I'll keep you updated on how I like the new site.

Today.com might be worth checking out. To apply to author a blog for them, go to www.today.com/apply. I sent them an article clip on a herb gardening article I wrote for Suite, somewhere between 500 and 600 words long.

For the short term, a brand new blog paying $5.00 per post seems pretty good. I guess if you have a HUGELY popular blog, you are better off setting it up yourself, on a site such as Orble, and collecting all the ad revenue yourself.

Take care,
Lynn

P.S. Do you have a blog on Today.com, or know anyone that has experience with this site? I'd like to hear from anyone else who is blogging over at Today.com.

Every time I write a new article, I list it with certain social networking and bookmarking sites. Most of these sites require that you set up a free account in order to access their services. I see quite a few page views to my articles coming in from Digg and Technorati.

If you can get an article listed on Stumble Upon, you should see a HUGE increase in page views. However, Stumble Upon limits the number of links it will accept from a certain website before it blocks you from adding anymore links from that site. So, instead of trying to link every article I write on Suite101 to Stumble Upon I just link my main page.

I've also had great success listing my latest articles on the various message board forums I belong to such as Absolute Write and Accentuate Writers. These are two freelancing websites that contain tons of useful information in addition to the message boards.

My Social Networking and Bookmarking Sites

Great way to find old high school and college classmates. However, the free account is a bit limited. To enjoy all the benefits this site has to offer, you would have to sign up for one of their subscription accounts. I haven't done this yet, trying to decide if it would be worth the $$ or not.

I like this site much better than MySpace. I link all my articles to my Facebook page. I get quite a few page views coming from my links on Facebook. Lots of bells and whistles that can be added to customize your personal Facebook page.

Travel Anthology Seeks Submissions

March 25th 2008 19:30
One of the sites I write for is Suite101. I just found this post from Luxury Vacations Feature Writer Jennifer Miner on the Suite forums.

Traval Anthology Seeks Submissions
Hi, I'm part of a (very) new group blog called TravelingMamas.com (as is another frequent Suite101 contributor). We're s-l-o-w-l-y growing, having a lot of fun, and putting together a travel anthology (think Chicken Soup or McSweeny's, but with a travel angle).

The deadline for submissions is the first of September, so no rush. If you think this is something you'd like to participate in - and get paid - then please check out our anthology page.

Don't let the blog name fool you: You don't have to be a mom to write about how edifying or mind-expanding travel can be!

Jennifer Miner
Luxury Vacations Feature Writer

I went to the Traveling Mamas anthology page to find out more information. The deadline for submissions is September 1st, 2008. If your story is accepted you will receive $50 plus a Traveling Mamas travel pack and a free copy of the book.

I'm definately going to try to write something to submit for the anthology. My husband, son, daughter and I travel to western NC every year after school gets out. We even bought 4 1/2 acres of land in Waynesville 2 years ago in the hopes to someday retire to the mountains and build our dream home.

Must be a story in there somewhere. Like the time I took everyone to Linville Caverns (I'm claustrophobic!)

Work for Smorty

February 21st 2008 01:26
Do you Smorty?
Smorty acts as a go between to connect advertisers with bloggers. The bloggers receive offers to advertise on blogs

This is an interesting opprotunity for bloggers that you may want to check out. Bloggers can choose which opportunities to accept and get paid for blogging. The bloggers write a review of the advertisers product and post the review to their blog.

Get Paid to Blog
The minimum Smorty post payment is $6. Bloggers who have higher ranking blogs will be offered higher payments. If you have a really popular, high page ranked site you can make as much as $100 per post according to Smorty. Bloggers are paid through Paypal once their post has been approved by the advertiser. Smorty pays the bloggers weekly.

Bloggers are not simply placing an advertisement on their blog. You pick out which blog advertising opportunities you are interested in. Then you write your personal opinion on the product or services being offered by the advertiser. You have up to 24 hours from the time you claim a blogging opportunity to write the review, add it to your blog, then submit the details about the blog post to Smorty. Each post should be between 150-400 words.

Smorty Approval
I filled out an online application on 2/17/08 to have my Freelance Online Work blog accepted into the Smorty program. On 2/20/08 I received an email saying that my blog had been approved. You can submit more than one blog for approval into the Smorty program. Smorty lets you register up to 10 blogs with their site. Once I see how I like the program with my Freelance Online Work blog, I may decide to add my other blogs for approval.

I've been writing for Suite101 since October, 2007. Suite101 is located in Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. Suite101 is an English language online content provider which is a fantastic opportunity for freelance writers. See my post dated 1/22/08 for details on my experience writing for Suite101.

On Valentine's Day Suite101 made the following announcement:

Suite101.de Launches Feb 14! We love Germany!

germany suite101 logo
Suite101.de Logo

Today marks an inaugural moment in Suite history – the soft (beta) launch of our first international site, bringing 2000 articles to German readers across the pond in Deutschland. We’d like to congratulate our Editor-in-Chief in Berlin, Dirk Westphal, who has been working tirelessly toward this day since the fall, and his 140 personally-selected writers who have been writing articles at a dizzying pace behind the scenes. Our own superb tech team has also been at this for a year, so kudos to them as well. Today the curtain rises and the public will be able to visit the site and surf to their heart’s content.

A week from today, on February 21, we will have the official (hard) launch of the site and will begin taking writer applications and addressing the media. Our President, Peter Berger, and our Communications Director, Marci Hotsenpiller, will be on hand for press conferences and local meetings with journalists in Berlin, Munich, and points in between. To check out our sister site visit www.suite101.de and see what all the fuss is about!

Passion. You must love the topic—possess a passion for it. You must have a passion to succeed and grow your blog's readership and traffic. Be a Guide on About.com

Writing for About.com
Does anyone on Orble know of anyone that currently writes for About.com? I would be curious to hear their opinion of the site. If you can get your foot in the door, it can be a very lucrative place to work for. New Guides are guaranteed a minimum payment of $725 per month for the first two years.

I've applied for a couple of available Guide topics but I've never even made it to their Prep Program. The Prep Program selects the top five applicants for a particular topic that needs a guide. Over the course of 17 days you work on making a mock site while writing articles, blogs and other content that is relevant to the topic being covered. At the end of the prep period one lucky writer is chosen to be the guide for that topic.

Here's some information regarding the guide program from the About.com website:

Overview
You're the passionate expert that other people turn to for advice, and you wouldn't have it any other way. You enjoy telling people what computer to buy, explaining how to fix a broken ceiling fan, giving out cheesecake recipes, or helping total strangers plan their vacations.

You're a seasoned writer with an engaging voice and an infectious enthusiasm for a particular topic. You're not necessarily a techie, but you're familiar with HTML.

If all of the above is true, perhaps you have what it takes to be an About.com Guide!

About.com is the Web's leading provider of practical solutions to everyday problems. Our expert Guides offer advice and tutorials on hundreds of topics, ranging from asthma to action movies, from home repair to home cooking, from gadgets to getaways.

As a Guide you'll build and maintain a GuideSite, a topical section of About.com which contains:

Original content (articles, reviews, FAQs, tutorials) written by you

A blog featuring your unique voice and personality

A directory of the best content in your topic, whether it be your own work or links to other sites

A discussion forum where you serve as community leader

All About.com Guides are freelancers who work online and set their own schedules, giving them the flexibility to log on from anywhere in the world whenever they have the time. With no timesheets to fill out and no timecards to punch, working for About.com gives you the flexibility to write when you want, even if you have a full-time day job.

Write for Shvoong?

January 18th 2008 22:01
shvoong logo
Shvoong.com Logo
Well, I'm actually recommending you don't write for this site. At least not until they become better established.

They pay their writers by giving them a tiny 10% of ad revenue that is generated from ads that are placed on the abstracts they write. And you must accumulate a minimum of $10.00 in ad revenue before you can be paid. This could take quite awhile to accumulate.

I don't even know how to describe this site. You can read free summaries of books, scientific articles and academic research. Then you can write abstracts of books, articles and research and post them to the site where they will be rated by other readers. The lowest rated articles will fall to the bottom of the list while the most popular ones will be at the top of the list. This almost sounds a little bit like Helium, I actually am a fan of Helium, but I will be addressing Helium in a future blog post.

But there isn't any editing done on the articles/summaries/abstracts, what ever you want to call them, that are uploaded to the site. I spent a couple of minutes surfing the site, and only found a bunch of garbage.

Topics that you can write abstracts for include: books, exact sciences, internet & technology, humanities, social sciences, newspapers, medicine & health and law & politics. Each topic has multiple subtopics to choose from. For instance, the medicine & health topic includes 27 subtopics including alternative medicine, nutrition, biochemistry, denistry, pediatrics, radiology and microbiology.

So it sounds like the site is wanting to become a serious, academic site. But until they have someway to edit the articles or monitor the content that is uploaded to the site I'm not sure I would want my name associated with such an unprofessional site.

Maybe this site is so new they just don't have a good focus/grasp of what they are doing at the moment. I did find a blog on the site where they are looking to hire a bunch of Sales Managers. Here is a copy of that blog:

Job Opportunity at Shvoong
January 10, 2008 — shvoong
We are looking for smart, dynamic individuals to take on the role of Junior Sales Manager in Poland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Russia, Japan, Mexico, Indonesia, England, and South Korea. The person will need to contact various advertisers and invite them to advertise their products and/or services on Shvoong.

Responsibilities:
Research and map the online market.
Designate relevant brands and agencies in the territory to advertise on Shvoong.
Bring in new leads and new clients.
Perform a high pace of daily phone calls.
Meet personal performance goals.

Qualifications:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and excellent English.
Experience with the online market is a plus.
Ability to work independently and gather information without supervision.
Fast, highly motivated, and hungry for success.
Good prioritization skills.
Responsible, reliable and honest.

You must be a resident and entitled to work in the country in which the position is located. Accordingly, you must have legal rights to work in the relevant country before you make the application – we do not provide sponsorship.

Please email your CV in English to business@shvoong.com with “Junior Sales Manager” in the subject line.
----------------------------- ----------------------------- ----------------------------- ----------

So who knows, maybe they will become a serious company in a few months/years down the road. But for now I wouldn't bother wasting your time with them. There are many proven online sites that you can write for and actually make money.

Maybe I just don't understand what this site is supposed to be. Who wants to read abstracts/summaries of other articles?

If you have any history of writing for Shvoong or know someone that has written for them, please add a comment to this post. I am hoping to hear from someone that actually likes the site and is making money from it.

Write for WebbleYou

A New Blog Site
WebbleYou is a new blog site I just discovered about 2 weeks ago. They pay blog authors 70% of any revenue generated from their blog. Revenue can be generated in a couple of ways: from Google AdSense ads that are placed on your blog or from targeted ads that WebbleYou sells to third parties which are placed on your blog. You can also setup Amazon affiliate links to books of interest that are related to your blog and you will retain any revenue generated this way.

Looking for Writers
WebbleYou is looking for writer's to write for existing blogs and to suggest topics for new blogs. The benefit in writing for an existing blog is that they already have recognition on Google and will have a higher page rank than a newer blog. A higher page rank generally means higher ad revenue.

Suggest a Blog
I wasn't interested in sharing ad revenue with other writer's so instead of applying to write for an existing blog I suggested a new topic for my own blog. My Bike Diva blog went live on WebbleYou earlier today. It's still so new that my banner logo hasn't even been added to my site yet.

Generating Revenue
WebbleYou says it can take up to a month before you may start earning any income. It usually takes at least a month for Google to recognize your site so before this time your Google AdSense ads might not be related to what you are blogging about. You also have to have your site established for awhile before WebbleYou will start to look for companies that they think will be interested in purchasing ads to be placed on your blog.

WebbleYou pays you through Paypal but unlike having to wait until you accumulate $100 in AdSense revenue to be paid by Google, WebbleYou will pay you as soon as you start generating income.

So, it's still too early to tell what kind of income, if any, I will make on WebbleYou. But I thought it would be interesting to see how it compared to other blog sites such as Orble.com. It sounds like there is potential to earn more on WebbleYou than on Orble so I'll keep you updated in the coming months.

Word Press
The WebbleYou blogs use the Word Press software. I am brand new to this program but WebbleYou has their site setup so you don't really have to know how to use Word Press. But if you know or take the time to learn Word Press I'm sure you could customize your blog with all kinds of bells and whistles.

Blog Network
WebbleYou only has 30 blogs in its network so far. So unlike Orble, you aren't going to have a lot of readers coming in from the other blogs. So you are going to have to spend a lot more time advertising/linking your site to other sites in order to find readers. But if you have an idea for a really hot topic it could do quite well. Their Caffeist blog already has a Google page rank of 4!

For more information visit the WebbleYou blog network site to find out how you can join the WebbleYou network.
